This weekend in Tijuana (Oct. 30–Nov. 1): a rainy Halloween, Día de Muertos and where to stay dry

Halloween and Día de Muertos share a weekend this year, and the weather wants in too. Baja California’s civil protection agency expects showers with locally heavy rain on Saturday afternoon and night, with lightning and hail, lasting into early Sunday (our weather story). Clocks also fall back an hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday. Here’s the weekend, with the indoor options marked.

Friday, Oct. 30: the driest night

The forecasts we’ve seen put Friday’s rain in the morning, so Friday night is the best bet for anything outdoors.

  • CECUT: the free Fiesta de las Ánimas runs noon to 8 p.m. through Sunday, and the Pasarela de Catrinas takes over the outdoor steps at 6 p.m. At 8 p.m., Noches de Terror screens Bram Stoker’s Dracula at the Cineteca (program).
  • Live music: Horna at Dragón Rojo, María Daniela y su Sonido Lasser at Marko Disko and Muto Tapes at Border Psycho Cantina, all at 7 p.m. per Songkick, plus the Wajdi Riahi Trio at CEART at 7:30 p.m., listed as free.
  • Comedy: Scary Stand Up at La Maquila, doors 7 p.m., 100 pesos, 18 and over.
  • New on the calendar: Arre Lucha Libre at Escape Club on Avenida Revolución at 8:30 p.m. (adults only), and El Boom: Gatsby Night, a 1950s Havana-themed night of live Cuban music at Club Ocampo, doors 7 p.m. (18+).

Saturday, Oct. 31: Halloween, under a roof if you can

The state expects the heaviest rain in the afternoon and at night, and San Diego Red’s reading of the Windy and Meteored forecasts has light but steady rain from about 4 p.m. If you’re heading to Avenida Revolución, bring a rain layer. Last year, the city warned adults that wearing masks in public could bring a fine, Zeta reported; we hadn’t seen this year’s rules as of Thursday morning.

  • Early and indoors: the Ballet Folklórico Cardones’ Matices del Folklor at CECUT at 6 p.m., a family show, and the last night of Noches de Terror, The Return of the Living Dead, at 8 p.m.
  • Club and stage nights (18+): Las Eras at Black Box at 7 p.m.; Hahahawelin, Halloween stand-up with a costume contest at Antigua Bodega de Papel, doors 8 p.m.; DJ Harvey at Marko Disko, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. per Resident Advisor; and Latigazo with Dinamarca at Bar Espina from 9 p.m.
  • Weather permitting: the free Sinfonía de terror y ritmo at the arch on Revolución at 9 p.m. is outdoors.
  • Last chance: Universo del Terror, the Halloween maze at a food park in Colonia Juárez, ends its run, with sessions from 5 p.m.
  • On TV: Xolos at Monterrey, 6 p.m. Tijuana time (preview).

Sunday, Nov. 1: clocks back, a wet morning, Día de Muertos

Clocks go back an hour at 2 a.m.; phones change on their own (details). El Imparcial’s outlook puts Sunday’s chance of rain at 95%, mostly in the morning.

  • Downtown parade: the Día de Muertos parade festival opens at 11 a.m. at the Mercado Benito Juárez, and the parade steps off at 1 p.m. from Calle Quinta and Ocampo, organizers said in September. If the rain is heavy, check their social media before you go.
  • Cemeteries: municipal cemeteries are open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday and Monday, and the city asks visitors not to bring alcohol or bands (rules).
  • Early start: the Día de Muertos 5K at Parque Esperanto at 8 a.m.
  • Indoors: La Dama de Negro at CECUT at 5 and 7:30 p.m., and the Roast Día de Muertos at La Maquila, doors 6 p.m. (adults only).
  • Last day: the book fair at Parque Morelos (details) and CECUT’s Fiesta de las Ánimas. México Eterno: Noche de Ánimas at Parque Morelos keeps going nightly, 6 to 11 p.m., through Monday.
  • Down the coast: Café en el Mar at the Rosarito Beach Hotel; the published hours differ, so confirm before you drive down.

If it pours

Our museums guide and rainy-day list have more plans with a roof. The state’s standing advice applies: don’t cross flooded streets or arroyos, and stay off the beach while the surf is up.

Next week

Tijuana Restaurant Week starts Monday, Nov. 2, with set menus at 199, 399 or 799 pesos; the FCE’s Librobús is due Tuesday; and The Old Globe’s free Macbeth plays CECUT on Thursday, Nov. 5. Everything else is on the calendar.
