Baja California falls back an hour on Sunday, Nov. 1, the same night as California: what to know

Tijuana and the rest of Baja California go back to standard time this weekend. At 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1, clocks fall back to 1 a.m., ending the seasonal schedule that has been in effect since March 8, Uniradio Informa reported, citing Mexico’s time zones law (Ley de los Husos Horarios). The change covers all of Baja California along with border municipalities in Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas, while the rest of Mexico, Sonora included, stays put, El Imparcial reported earlier this month.

California makes the same change at the same hour, so Tijuana and San Diego keep the same time, Uniradio noted, citing the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Baja California returns to UTC-8, the gap with Mexico City grows from one hour to two, and the state ends up an hour behind Sonora, according to the report. The next change comes on Sunday, March 14, 2027, when clocks spring forward again at 2 a.m.

What it means for your weekend

  • Halloween night gets an extra hour: early Sunday, 2 a.m. turns back into 1 a.m. If you’re out late, plan your ride home and your crossing with that in mind.
  • Phones and computers set to update the time automatically will change on their own; car, oven and wall clocks need to be set by hand, Uniradio advised.
  • Have a flight, a bus trip or a border appointment that weekend? Double-check the time, the report suggested.
  • From Sunday on, sunrise and sunset come an hour earlier on the clock.
  • Event times on our calendar are listed in Tijuana local time, before and after the change.
