Tijuana’s municipal cemeteries will be open to the public from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1, and Monday, Nov. 2, under a special Día de Muertos operation run by Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz’s administration, Tijuana Última Hora reported Wednesday. Burials are suspended on both days and resume on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at the usual hours, according to details from the city’s urban development department (Secretaría de Desarrollo Territorial y Urbano).
The city is assigning 60 people from its cemeteries department, plus 10 support staff to keep traffic moving inside the grounds, along with garbage trucks and trash drums. Cemeteries 12, 13 and 14 get a water truck, and 14 portable toilets are going to cemeteries 5, 9, 12, 13 and 14 because of the crowds expected, the report said. The city will also coordinate with its public safety department (SSPC) to help with order, security and traffic.
What the city asks
- Respect the opening hours and follow the staff’s instructions.
- Don’t double-park.
- Don’t bring alcoholic drinks or musical groups.
- Be respectful of neighboring graves.
- Bring your own cleaning supplies.
- Don’t put up tents over graves or set up street stalls.
Before you go
Sunday is also the day the clocks fall back an hour (at 2 a.m.), and the state’s forecast calls for rain from Saturday afternoon into early Sunday (our weather story), so pack a rain layer and allow extra time. Cempasúchil is on sale downtown (prices), and the same Sunday brings the downtown Día de Muertos parade. More plans for the weekend are on the calendar.
