Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe in Tijuana 2026: mañanitas, the pilgrimage and where to go on Dec. 11–12

Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe falls on Saturday, Dec. 12, this year, so the eve, when the mañanitas are traditionally sung to the Virgin, is Friday, Dec. 11. Tijuana’s 2026 program hasn’t been announced. Here’s what the city’s Catholic community did the last two years, where the celebrations happen and how to plan; we’ll update this page when the lineup and schedules are out.

Key dates

  • Friday, Dec. 11: the eve. In 2025, Tijuana’s mañanitas concert was scheduled to start at 4 p.m. on Dec. 11 at the Catedral Metropolitana in Zona Río, El Imparcial reported.
  • Saturday, Dec. 12: the feast day. It’s also a bank holiday on the CNBV’s 2026 calendar, according to UnoTV, though this year it lands on a Saturday, already a non-business day for banks.
  • The Sunday before: in 2024, a pilgrimage from downtown to the Zona Río cathedral was announced for Sunday, Dec. 8 (details below). Nothing has been announced for 2026.
  • Wednesday, Dec. 16: the first of the nine posadas, covered in our December planner.

The mañanitas: what happened last year

El Imparcial’s Dec. 5, 2025, preview listed the lineup in order: Diego Arriaga, El Mimo Moy, Quinto Traste, Grupo Sentencia2, Cadetes de Linares de Félix Gallegos and, closing the night, Adriel Favela, with musicians from the band Hasta la M taking part for a third time. The preview didn’t name an organizer or a ticket price. A year earlier, El Imparcial reported that the mañanitas would be sung on Dec. 12 at both the cathedral in Zona Río and the Santuario de la Virgen de Guadalupe downtown, at different times. Both years, the plans were reported in the first week of December (Dec. 2 in 2024, Dec. 5 in 2025), so that’s when to look for this year’s.

The pilgrimage

In 2024, El Imparcial reported that a pilgrimage would leave the Santuario de la Virgen de Guadalupe on Calle Segunda in Zona Centro at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8, and reach the cathedral in Zona Río by noon. The same report described matachín dancers, who perform in the Virgin’s honor, being received at the Zona Río cathedral by Archbishop Francisco Moreno Barrón; one dancer told the paper the dance is a way of giving thanks and of keeping the tradition alive in families.

Where it happens: two Guadalupe churches

Zona Río. The new cathedral, the Nueva Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, is on Paseo del Centenario 10150, in front of the city and state government buildings, and GCatholic still lists it as under construction. The Archdiocese of Tijuana scheduled its third Congreso Diocesano Guadalupano for the atrium on Aug. 15 and 16, 2026, Zeta reported, as part of the Church’s run-up to the 500th anniversary of the apparitions. The archdiocese covers Tijuana, Tecate and Playas de Rosarito and is made up of 101 parishes, per Zeta.

Zona Centro. The historic church at Calle Segunda and Avenida Niños Héroes, a federal historic monument since 2012, is also dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe; our profile has its history and phone number. Mind the names: in its 2024 coverage, El Imparcial called the Zona Río church the Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe and the Calle Segunda church the Santuario de la Virgen de Guadalupe, while directories such as GCatholic still list the downtown church as the cathedral. Check the address on any announcement.

What to expect

  • Crowds and early starts: in 2025, Tijuana’s municipal security department (SSPCM) added officers around churches for Dec. 12 to help with crowds and traffic, and asked early-morning worshippers to keep an eye on their belongings and children, San Diego Red reported.
  • It’s worship first: dress respectfully, give processions room and skip flash photos during Mass.
  • Weather: municipal civil protection expects El Niño’s most intense conditions from the second week of December (our update), so pack a rain jacket for anything outdoors.

Getting there and back

  • The Zona Río site is on Paseo del Centenario, and the downtown church is a short walk from Avenida Revolución. A taxi or ride-hail drop-off saves you a parking hunt on a busy night.
  • Dec. 11 and 12 are a Friday and a Saturday in December, so check CBP’s Border Wait Times site (bwt.cbp.gov) before you head back; on Saturday, Nov. 7, San Ysidro’s general car lanes reached 210 minutes in the afternoon (our story). Our border-crossing guide has lane and timing tips.

Also that weekend

  • Friday, Dec. 11: Posadarks, a Depeche Mode tribute night at Black Box, doors 7 p.m., per Tijuana Eventos.
  • Christmas lights: last year the Villa Navideña on Avenida Revolución opened on Dec. 6, Zeta reported; this year’s dates aren’t out yet, and our December planner will carry them.

We’ll add the 2026 mañanitas lineup, Mass times and any street closures here as they’re announced. Dates go on the calendar, and more ideas are in our guides.
