The Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, on Calle Segunda (Benito Juárez) at Avenida Niños Héroes in Zona Centro, is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Tijuana, on a corner where a church has stood since 1909. Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) declared it a historic monument in July 2012, El Imparcial reported. It’s a working church in the middle of downtown, not a museum, and its patron is the Virgin of Guadalupe, so Dec. 12, her feast day, is the key date on its calendar.
What’s there
According to El Imparcial’s 2017 history of the building, construction of a church on this corner began in 1909, on land donated by Manuela Garfias and her husband. That first church was made of wood, with a single tower, and is believed to have been bought in San Diego and moved to Tijuana. Services were suspended in times of conflict, including the Cristero War, but parishioners kept raising money, eventually enough to buy the painting of the Virgin of Guadalupe that is now on the altar and to give the church its form. It became Tijuana’s cathedral in the 1960s as the city grew; El Imparcial dates the change to 1966, while the GCatholic database gives January 1964.
Lonely Planet’s listing describes today’s building as a modern Catholic church amid downtown’s bustle.
What to expect
This is an active place of worship. In April 2025, El Imparcial reported that the archbishop led the Palm Sunday procession at the cathedral as thousands of Catholics in Tijuana marked the day. We couldn’t open a published Mass schedule, so if you want to attend a service, call the cathedral at (664) 685 3026, the number listed by GCatholic, before you go. As in any active church, dress respectfully, keep your voice down and skip photos during Mass.
Guadalupe Day and the new cathedral
The archdiocese is building a new cathedral, the Nueva Catedral Metropolitana Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, on Paseo del Centenario in Zona Río, in front of the city and state government buildings, and GCatholic still lists it as under construction. Architect Luis Armando Curiel Ortega’s design, unveiled in November 2017, covers a site of about two hectares that also includes a pastoral center, ACI Prensa (now EWTN News) reported at the time. Once it’s finished, Emmanuel Robles Mellín, coordinator of IMAC’s Tijuana Historical Archive, told El Imparcial in 2017, the downtown church will keep its historical value but will no longer be the administrative cathedral.
That matters around Dec. 12. In 2025, the traditional mañanitas concert for the Virgin was scheduled for the “Catedral Metropolitana” in Zona Río on Dec. 11, starting at 4 p.m., with Adriel Favela closing the lineup, El Imparcial reported in a Dec. 5 preview. If you’re planning around the feast day, check which site hosts each event; our December calendar will carry the 2026 details as they’re announced.
Getting there
The address is Calle Segunda (Benito Juárez) 7982, at Niños Héroes, Zona Centro, 22000, per GCatholic and Lonely Planet. It fits easily into a walk around downtown; our Zona Centro guide covers the streets around it. A taxi or ride-hail drop-off is the easy option from the border or Zona Río.
Good to know
- Phone: (664) 685 3026, per GCatholic.
- Two cathedrals: news about Tijuana’s “Catedral Metropolitana” may refer to the new site in Zona Río rather than this downtown church, so check the address.
- Heritage: INAH listed the building as a historic monument in 2012, according to El Imparcial.
- Respect the space: it’s a place of worship first; visits are best outside service times.
More of downtown is in our guides, and holiday dates are on the calendar.
