What’s there

The Casa de la Cultura Tijuana fills a neoclassical former school in Colonia Altamira, and the city calls it Tijuana’s first cultural venue to carry the name. It belongs to the city, and Zeta reports that it now falls under Tijuana’s Secretaría de Cultura. IMAC, the municipal arts and culture institute, lists a theater, the Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez library, the Galería Benjamín Serrano, a Café Literario and classrooms for workshops. The Escuela de Música del Noroeste also works out of the building.

Workshops cover dance, visual arts, music, acting, literature, hip hop, manga and languages, among others, according to IMAC, and since 2019 the Casa has run a three-year arts initiation program for children aged 6 to 9 with Mexico’s national fine arts institute (INBA). IMAC puts attendance at about 25,000 people a year, counting students and audiences.

The building

The building opened on July 17, 1930, as the Escuela Álvaro Obregón, a public primary school designed by architect Guerrero Preciado; local histories say it copies a school in Yuma, Arizona, with red brick in place of yellow. A state decree handed it to the city in the 1970s to become a cultural center, and Baja California declared it state cultural heritage in 2014. The anniversary falls on Oct. 15; for the 49th, on Oct. 15, 2026, the city scheduled a free concert by Tiko’s Big Band to raise money to rehabilitate and equip the building (our story).

The building needs work. In September 2025, El Imparcial reported severe damage to its infrastructure; coordinator Mara Maciel said any contribution would help rehabilitate the space, and a Baja California car club donated proceeds from its lowrider shows toward painting, roof work and other repairs.

What to expect

Exhibitions rotate through the Galería Benjamín Serrano: this summer it showed Tijuana artist Nuria Pujol-Caire’s “Caos/Cosmos,” free, on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., AFN reported. Bigger events spread into the gardens and the theater: for its fifth anniversary on Oct. 3 and 4, Sticker Palooza Tijuana, a free sticker-art festival, announced more than 100 artists across the gardens, the first and second floors and the theater, according to En Línea BC.
