The Museo de Historia de Tijuana, known as MUHTI, tells the city’s story inside the Antiguo Palacio Municipal, the old city hall at Calle Segunda and Avenida Constitución in Zona Centro. It opens Tuesday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to a July 2026 guide by TV Azteca Baja California and the San Diego Museum Council, and TV Azteca lists entry as free.
What’s there
The permanent collection is laid out in five halls: natural history, social and political history, urban growth and development, cultural history and economic history, according to the San Diego Museum Council and Mexico’s federal cultural information system (SIC). The SIC record also lists a temporary-exhibition hall, a children’s room for ages 4 to 12, interactive screens and guided tours. When the museum opened in November 2010, SanDiegoRed reported pieces such as a 1908 military saber, old cash registers and telephones and jai alai baskets.
The building
The Antiguo Palacio Municipal dates from 1921, according to the city’s culture institute, IMAC. It held federal and territorial government offices until 1953 and was Tijuana’s city hall from 1954 to 1986; IMAC has been based there since 1998, and the building was declared state cultural heritage in 2014. It still works as a cultural hub: Zeta announced a presentation of a novel by Pedro Ochoa in the museum’s lobby for Feb. 13, 2025, and reported that the 19th Simposio de Historia de Tijuana was scheduled in the building for July 8–11, 2026.
What to expect
Plan on a short visit. SanDiegoRed reported that a 900-square-meter area of the old building was adapted for the museum when it opened, so it fits easily into a downtown afternoon, and it makes a good first stop if you want some context before walking Avenida Revolución.
Prices and entry
Entry is free, per TV Azteca Baja California and the SIC record. The SIC listing, last updated in 2023, gives different hours (Tuesday to Sunday from 8 a.m.), so if you’re planning a Sunday or an early visit, call ahead at (664) 638 1052, the number on IMAC’s museum page.
Getting there
The museum is at Calle Segunda, also called Benito Juárez, and Avenida Constitución, in Zona Centro near Avenida Revolución. It pairs well with the downtown stops in our Zona Centro guide, including the Museo del Taco and the lucha libre museum (MULLME).
