Ranas Bar is a rock bar in Plaza Fiesta, the open-air bar complex on Paseo de los Héroes in Zona Río. It reopened on May 17, 2024, with more than 100 people at the relaunch, Tijuana Eventos reported, and Nómadas Press announced a first-anniversary weekend with bands for May 16 and 17, 2025.

The vibe

The comeback runs on nostalgia. Tijuana Eventos, reporting its return after 35 years, called the original Ranas a 1980s gathering place for a generation of young people, while Nómadas Press remembers it as one of the city’s signature nightspots of the 1990s. Either way, the reopening kept the concept: pitchers and tarros (big mugs) of beer, a DJ playing 80s and 90s hits and a stage for rock bands, both new and established, according to Tijuana Eventos. Nómadas Press describes nights devoted to rock from the 70s, 80s and 90s, shows by up-and-coming regional acts and a bar that works as a “semillero” (a seedbed) for new bands.

What to expect

The bookings have ranged from Tijuana rock history to the darker corners of the scene. Tijuana No! played on Aug. 9, 2024, with Mercado Negro and Los Rattleskanes, per Nómadas Press; Tijuana Eventos listed that night as free, at 8 p.m., and also listed a free ska and folk night for Sept. 27, 2024, at 8 p.m. The CaliGoth Dark Fest featured goth and alternative acts on Nov. 2, 2024, according to Nómadas Press, and setlist.fm logs a show by the band Prisoner on March 29, 2025. HazTJ’s venue page sums up the programming as rock in English and Spanish.

In 2024, Tijuana Eventos named Óscar Joel Silva, the bar’s original bartender, as its manager; he said his former boss, who owns the Ranas name, gave him the go-ahead to use it. Rock promoters Elizabeth Ortega and Barbarella Pardo helped organize the reopening.

Prices and entry

We found no published cover or drink prices. The two 2024 concerts listed on Tijuana Eventos were free to enter, and Pardo promised special promotions at the reopening, per the same report. As with the rest of Plaza Fiesta, bring ID, since the plaza’s clubs check at the door, and some cash, as smaller bars there may not take cards (see our Plaza Fiesta profile).

Plaza Fiesta is on Paseo de los Héroes at Calle Juan Sarabia, in Zona Río. A taxi or ride-hail is the simplest way in and out at night, and the other bars in the complex are listed on our Plaza Fiesta profile if you want to make a night of it.
