Sushi en la Azotea is the rooftop Japanese restaurant on top of the K Tower Boutique Hotel by Lucerna on Paseo de los Héroes, in the middle of Zona Río. The name says it: sushi on the roof, with the city skyline around you, a pool and the hotel’s El Tinaco bar sharing the terrace, and a soundtrack that drifts toward club music as the night goes on. It is the place people pick for a sunset date, a birthday with a view or a first-night dinner when staying in the Río.
The food
The kitchen sticks to the Japanese canon as Tijuana likes it: specialty rolls, makis and nigiri, sashimi and tuna worked at the sushi bar, gyozas and a few hot dishes, including ramen. The restaurant emphasizes fresh fish and seafood, and the bar does mixology, sake, Japanese and craft beers, wine and spirits. Reviewers single out the rainbow roll and a mango margarita. Opinions on the food are split, and have been for years: some visitors find the rolls fresh and nicely plated, others call the menu short and the cooking average. Almost everyone agrees the view is the reason to come.
What to expect
A six-story building with the terrace on top, modern furniture, lounge seating and a bar that stays open later than the kitchen. The restaurant lists Monday to Thursday 1 p.m. to 10:45 p.m., Friday and Saturday 1 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., with the bar running to 1 a.m. early in the week and 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday. Dress is smart casual. It gets busy at sunset and on weekend nights, and service can slow down when it does; hotel guests and outside diners share the terrace.
Prices and reservations
OpenTable lists the restaurant in its MX$500-and-up per person band; a 2023 local roundup put individual dishes between MX$150 and MX$450. Reserve through OpenTable or by phone at +52 664 633 7505, and ask for a table on the edge if you are there for the view.
Getting there
The address is Paseo de los Héroes 10902, Zona Río, next to the Hotel Lucerna and a short walk from Plaza Río, the CECUT and the Río’s hotel row; it is a few minutes by car from the San Ysidro crossing. Hotel parking is available, and the hotel’s own listing says the restaurant is open daily.
Good to know
The terrace is open-air, so a jacket is a good idea on winter nights. If the food matters more than the view, the Río has stronger sushi a few minutes away; if the view is the point, book for the hour before sunset. Eric’s visit, with a rating, is in his Sushi en la Azotea review.
