Oryx is chef Ruffo Ibarra’s restaurant on Boulevard Agua Caliente, a Michelin Guide-listed kitchen that cooks what Ibarra calls CaliBaja: contemporary Mexican food built on Baja California seafood, northern meats and a bit of Southern California attitude. It is one of the few Tijuana restaurants that pairs a serious, tasting-style dinner with a late bar, thanks to Nortico, the hidden speakeasy behind its dining room. The regulars are Tijuana’s food crowd, visiting chefs and San Diegans who come down specifically for dinner.
The food
Ibarra trained at Tijuana’s Culinary Art School and did stages at Osteria Francescana in Italy and El Cenador de Amós in Spain, and the menu shows it: polished technique on local ingredients. The 2026 Michelin Guide Mexico entry highlights a shrimp consommé finished at the table, crisp striped bass with onion purée, and churros with bourbon ice cream. Other plates that have defined the place include a San QuintÃn oyster with fermented tomato water and strawberry, green aguachile, a “taco negro” on blue corn, prime beef fillet with truffled potato purée and a cacao sponge with tamarind. Diners on OpenTable rave about the octopus prepared tableside and the Oryx Spritz. There are regional craft beers, Baja wines and a sommelier on hand for the multi-course dinners the restaurant runs on special dates.
What to expect
The room is dressed-up industrial: exposed red brick, metal beams, wood and tile floors, warm lighting, a bar and a terrace. The concept started around 2015 as a casual urban spot with duck-confit tacos and nachos, paused during the pandemic and reopened in 2022 in its current, more ambitious form; it celebrates an 11th anniversary in October 2026 with a ticketed dinner. Nortico, which opened in 2016 as Tijuana’s first speakeasy, is reached through a hidden door off the hallway to the restrooms. Its cocktail list leans on pre-Prohibition classics, a few bar seats are kept for walk-ins and the rest are reserved by message.
Prices and reservations
OpenTable lists Oryx at MX$500 and up per person; the Michelin Guide marks it as a mid-range “$$” for Mexico. The restaurant handles its own bookings (+52 664 754 7562) and also appears on OpenTable; the anniversary dinner was priced at MX$2,100 per person, a fair gauge of a tasting-menu night. Smart casual dress is listed, and valet runs Thursday through Saturday from 4 p.m.
Getting there
The address is Blvd. Agua Caliente 10750, interiors 84 and 85, Colonia Calete, in the Plaza Conquistador complex between Agua Caliente and Boulevard Salinas, a short drive east of Zona RÃo. Use ride-hail at night; the valet makes a car practical on weekends.
Good to know
Hours differ between listings: Monday to Saturday from 1 p.m., with Thursday to Saturday running to 2 a.m. for the bar, and Sunday either closed or breakfast-only depending on the source, so check Instagram (@oryxrestaurante) before a Sunday plan. Mention birthdays when you book, and ask to see Nortico after dinner. Eric’s visit, with a rating, is in his Oryx review.
