The Centro Cultural Tijuana, which everyone calls CECUT (say “seh-COOT”), is the round building and dome on Paseo de los Héroes in Zona Río and the city’s main public cultural venue. It opened on October 20, 1982, to a design by Pedro Ramírez Vázquez and Manuel Rosen Morrison, and it is run by Mexico’s federal Secretaría de Cultura. This is where Tijuana goes for museum exhibits, film, theater, the symphony and free outdoor shows, and it is an easy first stop for visitors because it sits about 2 km (1.3 miles) from the San Ysidro pedestrian crossing.
What’s there
The campus covers about 3.5 hectares with several spaces, each with its own program:
- Museo de las Californias: the permanent history exhibit, more than 200 pieces that walk from the peninsula’s first peoples through the missions and the border era to the first half of the twentieth century.
- Cine Planetario, “La Bola”: the 308-seat IMAX dome that gives the building its nickname, screening documentaries on a 360-degree screen.
- El Cubo: the cube-shaped gallery added in 2008 for temporary and touring exhibitions.
- Sala de Espectáculos: a theater of roughly 1,000 seats used by orchestras, touring companies and festivals.
- Jardín Caracol, the Acuario and CECUTi: a garden with replicas of pre-Hispanic sculpture, a small aquarium and a children’s area.
- The explanada: a 5,700-square-meter plaza that holds up to 6,000 people for free concerts, Día de Muertos festivities and fairs.
There is also the Cineteca Tijuana for art-house film, a bookstore, a café and the Centro de Documentación de las Artes.
What to expect
Programming runs the full range, and the 44th-anniversary season in fall 2026 is a fair sample: the Encuentro Internacional de Teatro, a free San Diego Symphony concert of Tchaikovsky’s Fifth, a free big-band night on the explanada, a Star Wars-themed concert by the Sinfónica Juvenil de Tijuana (MX$400), an IMAX documentary premiere, the Fiesta de las Ánimas for Día de Muertos (October 29 to November 1) with a Catrina parade, workshops and screenings, and the FeLiNo literature festival in mid-November. Many events are free; ticketed shows sell at the box office and at cecut.gob.mx. Weekends bring families, weekday mornings bring school groups, and late afternoons are the quietest time in the museum.
Prices and entry
Each space has its own admission, and prices change with the exhibit, so check the current list on cecut.gob.mx before you go. CECUT also runs seasonal promotions (the summer one is called “Vive CECUT”); ask at the ticket desk what is on offer that week.
Getting there
Address: Paseo de los Héroes 9350, at the corner of Francisco Javier Mina, Zona Urbana Río. From San Ysidro it is about 10 minutes by taxi or ride-hail, or a 30-to-40-minute walk through Zona Río; from Avenida Revolución count on 10 minutes by car. Mercado Hidalgo and the Plaza Río mall are a few blocks away, so CECUT works well as the anchor for a Zona Río afternoon. Drivers drop you at the main entrance on Paseo de los Héroes.
Good to know
- The San Diego Museum Council lists museum hours as Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., closed Mondays. Evening shows and explanada events run later, so go by the event listing rather than the museum clock.
- In September 2026 CECUT had to cancel a day of IMAX and Cineteca screenings because of power outages in the city; if you are making the trip just for the dome, confirm the day’s showtimes on its social media first.
- Explanada events depend on the weather and are usually free. Bring a layer: Zona Río gets cool after dark.
