Thanksgiving is Thursday, Nov. 26. It’s a U.S. holiday, not a Mexican one, so in Tijuana it’s a normal working Thursday: Mexico’s remaining official days off this year are Monday, Nov. 16, and Christmas Day, according to Bloomberg Línea, and neither Nov. 26 nor Nov. 27 is on the 2026 bank-holiday calendar, UnoTV reported. What changes is the traffic at the border, and this year the long weekend also brings a stadium concert, the Liga MX quarterfinals and a busy Saturday of shows. Here’s what’s confirmed so far; we’ll update this planner as details firm up.
Crossing: plan around the lines
November and December are among the busiest months at San Ysidro, which handled more than 5.5 million crossings in those two months of 2022, inewsource reported in its holiday crossing guide. Its analysis of San Ysidro’s general lanes over Thanksgiving 2022 found the lines were usually shortest early in the morning, before 7 a.m., from Thursday to Sunday, and in the evening, after 7 p.m., on Wednesday and Thursday. Joaquin Luken of the Smart Border Coalition told inewsource to avoid the early-morning and late-afternoon rush hours and, heading south, to avoid crossing into Mexico after 3 p.m.
Early mornings worked on Black Friday 2024 too: at about 6:10 a.m. that day, waits in San Ysidro’s general, Ready Lane and SENTRI vehicle lanes were 10 minutes, San Diego Red reported. Lines change fast, so check before you leave:
- Heading north: CBP’s Border Wait Times app or website, or the wait bar at the top of this site.
- Heading south: Caltrans QuickMap shows waits into Mexico at San Ysidro and Otay Mesa.
- Have your documents in hand and know which lane you qualify for. Our border-crossing guide explains the general lanes, Ready Lane and SENTRI, and our alert kit lists where to check waits and weather.
What’s open
Because Thanksgiving isn’t a Mexican holiday, Thursday and Friday are regular business days in Tijuana, and bank branches are open. If you need a bank teller earlier in the month, skip Monday, Nov. 16, when branches close for Revolution Day (ATMs keep working). Shopping? Mexico’s own sales event, El Buen Fin, runs two weeks earlier, from Nov. 13 to 17 (our story).
Day by day
- Wednesday, Nov. 25, and Thursday, Nov. 26: first legs of the Liga MX quarterfinals (see Xolos below).
- Thursday, Nov. 26: Ricardo Arjona brings his “Lo que el seco no dijo” tour to Estadio Caliente, according to Songkick and Buena Música; doors open at 7 p.m., the concert starts at 9 p.m. and tickets start at 941 pesos on Boletomóvil, Zeta reported on Nov. 4 (details, our story). Earlier, at 6 p.m., Alejandra del Río’s free sculpture show Ecos del eterno femenino opens at Casa de la Cultura Tijuana.
- Friday, Nov. 27: Wuicho Kun plays Black Box on Avenida Revolución, doors 7 p.m. (details).
- Saturday, Nov. 28: the Monster X Tour at Toros Mobil Park, show at 7 p.m., and Mägo de Oz at El Trompo’s Audiorama at 9 p.m., with more dance and live music that night on the calendar. Quarterfinal second legs are played Nov. 28 and 29.
- Sunday, Nov. 29: the last quarterfinal games, and the trip home for most visitors; the early-morning pattern above is worth a try.
Xolos and the Liguilla
Xolos are sixth with two regular-season games left: at Necaxa on Nov. 6 and at home against Atlante on Nov. 20. This season the top eight go straight to the quarterfinals, played over two legs on Nov. 25–26 and Nov. 28–29, ClaroSports reported, so if Tijuana stay in the top eight, one leg will be at Estadio Caliente during Thanksgiving week. The exact dates and kickoff times depend on the final table; we’ll add them here once they’re published. The standings are in our preview of the Necaxa game.
Where to eat
We haven’t seen any Thanksgiving dinner announcements from Tijuana restaurants for 2026 yet; if they’re published, we’ll list them here. Craving an American-style plate? Diner House, a 1950s-style diner in the Cacho area, serves breakfasts, burgers and shakes, and its website lists daily hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. For everything else, from taco stands to Baja Med dinners, start with our Restaurants guide.
Weather
Pack a layer and an umbrella. Tijuana’s city government said on Nov. 2 that El Niño could hit the region harder from the last week of November into early December (our story); on Nov. 4, the acting head of municipal civil protection, Sergio Pérez, said forecasts point to the most intense conditions from the second week of December, and the city is preparing an emergency operations center and shelters (update). Neither gave rainfall figures, so check the forecast before you travel.
More events for the weekend are on our calendar, and more ideas are in our guides.
