Tijuana closed the slow lane of the Vía Rápida Poniente between Avenida Vasco de Quiroga and Calzada Ermita Norte, in front of the SITT station at the Unidad Deportiva, on Thursday, Oct. 29, for about 11 days of repairs, the city government said. The closure affects drivers heading from Zona Río toward La Mesa.
According to the city, vandals set fire to the storm-drain pipes under the road, and the damage cracked and sank the road slab. Crews are digging out the section, clearing debris and putting in new drainage, working 24 hours a day, and the heavy machinery takes up the side lane, so it’s fully blocked along that stretch, Tijuana en Línea reported. The city decided to replace all of the collapsed storm-drain infrastructure to prevent bigger sinkholes and wants to restore normal traffic before the damage spreads to other lanes, the outlet said.
How to get around it
- Move into the Vía Rápida Poniente’s central lanes before the closed stretch.
- For local trips, use Calle Villasana and Avenida Vasco de Quiroga.
- Leave early, slow down near the work zone and follow the signs; the city warned of delays.
The city hasn’t given a reopening date beyond the 11-day estimate. Heading out this weekend? Check our rain forecast, our guides and the calendar.
