Hotel Pueblo Amigo is the hotel at the entrance to Tijuana from San Ysidro, inside the Pueblo Amigo plaza on the Vía Rápida Oriente, a few hundred meters from the port of entry and at the edge of Zona Río. The hotel markets itself as the closest to the U.S. border, and the location is the whole point: you can walk in from the pedestrian crossing, you are minutes from CECUT, Plaza Río and the government center, and you can be back in the crossing line early without calling a taxi. A Caliente casino runs around the clock downstairs.
What’s there
About 108 rooms; El Patio, a restaurant with international dishes, a daily breakfast buffet and a popular Sunday brunch; a bar; event halls and gardens for weddings and banquets; a business center; free Wi-Fi; free private parking; a hot tub; and a shuttle to the border on request. The casino, operated by Caliente, has slot machines and table games and never closes. Bilingual staff and round-the-clock security are part of the pitch, and guests mention both.
What to expect
A practical mid-range hotel that fills with people who have early appointments near the border, medical and business travelers, weekend visitors and casino regulars. Rooms are spacious by local standards; those on the street side pick up early-morning traffic from the Vía Rápida, so ask for one facing away from the road if you sleep lightly. The casino floor is lively and loud, but the guest floors are quiet. It sells out on some weekends and in summer, so book ahead. Room service runs late, which matters after a night out.
Prices and entry
Rates are mid-range for Tijuana, and breakfast is charged separately unless your rate includes it. Parking is free for guests. The casino is for adults; bring ID.
