Power outages are no longer isolated incidents for Tijuana restaurants; they now happen every week, the president of the city’s restaurant chamber, Canirac Tijuana, said in comments published Monday. In an internal survey, 95% of the members who responded reported lost sales in August and September, and those losses add up to more than 1 million pesos, according to En Línea BC and Diario Tijuana. The chamber says that figure doesn’t include spoiled ingredients or damaged equipment, Semanario Zeta reported.
The areas the chamber pointed to include colonias Madero and Hipódromo, downtown, Zona Río and Playas de Tijuana, according to Diario Tijuana. Zeta cited a restaurant in Bellas Artes that had been without power since Saturday.
The chamber is asking the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) for a work plan with dates, actions and people in charge, plus a direct channel for businesses to report failures, and said it expected to meet with the utility in the coming days (En Línea BC). It told Zeta it has received no diagnosis or protocol from the authorities so far.
Restaurants aren’t the only ones affected. On Sept. 11, CECUT suspended its Domo IMAX and Cineteca screenings, citing the constant power failures in the city (Zeta). In Playas de Tijuana, residents and business owners told Zeta in early October that they had gone four days or more without electricity; a CFE source, who was not named, told the paper the failures were isolated, involving individual transformers that each serve about 20 homes, and blamed a jump in demand during the heat.
