**Branch Closures of Baja Gas in Tijuana and Intensified Inspections**
The city of Tijuana has recently witnessed heightened safety measures concerning gas stations following two recent explosions in the Madero neighborhood. As a result, local authorities have intensified inspections, leading to the closure of two branches of the Baja Gas company as of February 12. The closures took place on Avenida 20 de Noviembre and in the Libertad neighborhood.
Arnulfo Guerrero León, the Secretary of Government, announced that these actions are part of a broader inspection initiative targeting the city’s approximately 20 gas stations. The inspections aim to ensure compliance with safety and operational regulations. Among the primary infractions noted were failures to provide necessary documentation such as the renewal of operation licenses, advertising licenses, functionality permits, and others related to environmental and operational safety.
In addition to the closures, five establishments were fined for operating without required permits, though specific locations and company names were not disclosed.
“We are conducting a comprehensive review of all gas distribution and sales stations to ensure they meet safety requirements, thereby protecting customers from potential hazards,” remarked Guerrero León.
Fines could be as high as 500,000 pesos for non-compliance. Guerrero León emphasized the city’s responsibility to ensure safe service delivery to Tijuana’s residents and pointed out particular concern over the explosions on February 10 and 13 in the Madero neighborhood, which fortunately resulted only in material damage.
José Luis Jiménez, the director of Municipal Civil Protection, highlighted a recent incident on February 12 involving a gas leak on Avenida Brasil. The leak necessitated the evacuation of around 50 people from 15 different businesses and the temporary safeguarding of 320 individuals from a nearby school. Previously, on February 10, another gas leak was reported in the same area.
In 2025 alone, the Madero neighborhood has seen five gas leaks, following 20 documented incidents in 2024.
