Tijuana’s city government says its “Tijuana: Ciudad Limpia” program has reached 318 neighborhoods in all nine municipal delegations, from Centro and Playas de Tijuana to La Mesa, Otay Centenario and La Presa, according to a communiqué released Friday.
Figures from the city’s urban development department, the SecretarÃa de Desarrollo Territorial y Urbano, include:
- 30,120 cubic meters of heavy trash and rubble removed
- 46,588 square meters of street milling and pothole repair
- About 2.6 million square meters of grading on unpaved roads
- 633,486 square meters of streets swept, washed or cleaned
- 51,839 square meters of road signs and markings
Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz said the program will continue and reach more neighborhoods, and asked residents to look after the areas that have been cleaned, not to litter, and to report any irregularity to 072.
Why it matters this weekend
Trash that blocks drains makes street flooding worse. Ahead of Tropical Storm Rachel, the city’s public security and citizen protection department (SSPCM) asked residents to clean gutters and keep drains, storm channels and streets free of trash, Uniradio Informa reported. The state government also said it would step up inspections for illegal dumping and check watercourses for blockages.
- Problems with city services, such as dumped trash or debris: call 072.
- Emergencies, including flooding that puts people at risk: call 911.
