**Tecate Seeks to Remove Parking Meters in Downtown Area**

The city of Tecate is making strides to cancel the parking meters in its downtown area, following feedback from the community. A recent survey conducted by the local government showed that 88% of participants are in favor of removing the meters. In response, authorities are exploring legal routes to terminate the contract with the current concession company, Iberparking, as confirmed by Alejandro Ruiz GarcĂa, Director of Inpladem in Tecate.

The survey gathered responses from a total of 800 individuals, consisting of 220 physical questionnaires and the remainder filled out online. Additionally, 70% of respondents expressed concerns regarding the transparency of the contract, claiming it benefits the company over the citizens, with unclear parking fees further complicating matters.

Roman Cota Muñoz, the Mayor of Tecate, emphasized the need for a mutual agreement with the concessionaire to prevent a costly legal dispute that could burden future city administrations. Past incidents have already led to a 300 million peso lawsuit won by Iberparking after a previous concession withdrawal, highlighting the need for careful negotiation.

Cota Muñoz reassured citizens that a payout of the 300 million peso claim is not the only solution, as they are pursuing a dialogue to potentially dissolve the contract amicably while keeping the community’s interests at the forefront.

Despite Iberparking resuming operations in December 2023 after a legal victory, there has been public opposition to the continued fees. Ruiz GarcĂa noted that the survey aimed to remain impartial, ensuring that the feedback reflected the genuine position of Tecate residents.
