## Promoting Responsible Consumption of Local Seafood is Essential
The president of the Mexican Council for the Promotion of Fishery and Aquaculture Products, Citlali Gómez Lepe, has emphasized the importance of encouraging responsible consumption of sustainable fishing practices in Mexico, particularly among artisanal fisheries. The initiative targets improving fishing operations in Baja California and across the country, both in rural aquaculture and artisanal fishing.
“We aim to integrate all fisheries in Baja California that are not yet part of improvement programs,” stated Gómez Lepe. The founder of the Future Fishing Movement highlighted that respecting size limits, minimum catches, fishing periods, and closed seasons is crucial.
She added that providing marketplaces where fishermen can offer their produce while receiving better value and recognition from chefs is vital. This would involve familiarizing chefs and consumers with the national market and species like cabrilla, verdillo, corvina, and the large clam. Currently, many of these high-value species are exported to foreign markets in Asia and Europe.
“We want to strengthen the position of Mexican fisheries within the national market,” Gómez Lepe stressed. Additionally, she noted that the Mexican sardine is a prominent product, having attained certification under the highest sustainability standards worldwide. “Our goal is to have sardines become a staple in Mexican households; it is high-quality, economically accessible, and proudly Mexican,” she concluded.
## Global Warming Causes Marine Soil Desertification in Baja California
Experts have raised concerns about the desertification of marine soils in Baja California due to global warming. This environmental phenomenon severely impacts the local fishing industry, threatening the livelihoods of fishermen and the sustainability of marine ecosystems. It underscores the urgent need to adopt environmentally conscious fishing practices to combat adverse climatic effects and preserve marine biodiversity. Addressing these challenges requires collective efforts from policymakers, fishermen, and consumers to ensure a resilient marine environment.
