Rosarito Water Revolution

Rosarito’s cutting-edge desalination plant marks a monumental stride for water sustainability and tourism, positioning the city at the forefront of regional development and global innovation.

### Rosarito’s Desalination Plant: A Revolutionary Step for Water Supply and Tourism

Rosarito is set to embark on a transformative project with the confirmation of a new desalination plant. Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum revealed this exciting development during a recent press conference. As part of the National Water Plan, the project is estimated to require an investment of 12 billion pesos, equivalent to approximately $648 million USD.

“Yes, we are going to build it… We will make the desalination plant in Baja California a reality,” President Sheinbaum asserted confidently.

Reacting to this announcement, Rosarito’s Mayor Rocío Adame expressed her enthusiasm on social media, highlighting the significance of the plant for improving water supply in South Rosarito and safeguarding the region’s beaches.

#### A Path Towards Sustainability

Classified as a Greenfield project, the desalination plant will have the capacity to produce 2,200 liters of water per second. This substantial output will ensure a stable and sustainable water supply for the entire region. The project last underwent a review on March 12, 2025, and is financially backed by Banobras and Fonadin.

Aside from this infrastructure leap, Rosarito is channeling efforts into enhancing tourism in an environmentally responsible manner. Mayor Adame’s administration is working swiftly towards obtaining the National Tourism Quality Certification, which stands as a testament to high standards and ecological sustainability for destinations throughout Mexico.

“This certification is a comprehensive recognition of quality and sustainability in tourism,” stated Paul Corona Rodríguez, president of COTUCO Rosarito.

With significant investments in infrastructure and a robust focus on sustainable tourism, Rosarito is positioning itself as a frontrunner in regional development within the nation.

### Additional Insights: The Rise in Desalination Efforts

Globally, desalination is becoming an increasingly vital solution for addressing water scarcity. Over the years, numerous countries have ramped up similar projects, transforming seawater into potable water to meet rising demands. For instance, California has implemented several desalination plants to counteract drought impacts, while the Middle East has long relied on this technology to support its growing populations. The wide adoption underscores the critical role desalination is playing in ensuring sustainable water management worldwide. With Rosarito’s new plant, the region is aligning itself with this global movement toward innovation in water supply solutions.
