Painter Juan Ángel Castillo opened “Paisaje monumental,” a solo show of Baja California landscapes, on Friday, Oct. 9 at Galería de Arte POP in downtown Tijuana, Zeta and El Congresista reported. It is his first landscape exhibition since 2021, after a show of abstract work in 2023, according to El Congresista.
The show has 10 acrylics on canvas in medium and large formats, and Zeta reported they come from the Padilla family’s collection. The titles read like a road trip down the peninsula: “La Rumorosa,” “Punta Banda I,” “Salsipuedes,” “Sierra Blanca,” “Misión de San Javier” and “Valle de los cirios II.” The biggest one mentioned, “Punta Banda I,” measures 3.77 by 1.77 meters, and “La Rumorosa” is 1.99 by 1.25 meters (El Congresista).
Castillo was born in Chalchihuites, Zacatecas, in 1949. At the opening he said light is what makes a painting as attractive as it can be, and that he has lived from his painting all his life (Zeta). Pedro Ochoa Palacio also spoke, citing the late Rubén Vizcaíno on landscape as the first space of cultural identity.
