Tijuana’s municipal libraries have a free program of workshops and activities for November, Tijuana en Línea reported on Oct. 31, and the city posted a press release on the same plan that day. It opens with Day of the Dead altars at every library in the network from Tuesday, Nov. 3, through Friday, Nov. 6, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and visitors can bring portraits of relatives who have died to add to the shared offerings. Yadira Gutiérrez Ávila, identified in the report as the city’s secretary of culture, said the libraries would set up collective altars and neighborhood memory projects.
What’s on
- Nov. 3–6: Day of the Dead altars at all branches, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Nov. 5: a discussion of Albert Camus’s The Stranger at the Biblioteca Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz.
- Nov. 9–13: a book conservation and repair course for young people and adults at the Biblioteca Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez.
- Nov. 12: a book swap for Mexico’s National Book Day at the Biblioteca Gustavo Aubanel Vallejo, and a children’s and youth event, “La niña que nunca paró de leer y escribir,” at the Sor Juana library.
- Nov. 26: sessions marking the International Day of Philosophy at the Biblioteca Pública Regional Benito Juárez García, which also has titles in Braille.
- Also in November: Chi Kung and ballroom dance classes all month at the Gustavo Aubanel Vallejo library; a tactile reading club on Ignacio Manuel Altamirano’s novel El Zarco at the Biblioteca Braulio Maldonado, with Braille recommendations; the children’s activity “El color de los girasoles” and the participatory program “Sor Juana sin Solemnidad,” both Nov. 3–27; and “Mi Colonia también tiene Memoria,” which invites older adults to record the stories of their neighborhoods.
- Weekdays: “La Hora del Cuento” storytime at the Benito Juárez García library at 9 and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Before you go
All of it is free, according to the report. It doesn’t list library addresses, class times for the monthly courses or whether you need to sign up, so check with the library before you go. More culture this month is on the calendar.
