The much-anticipated 2024 edition of the “Travesía Baja 100,” known as the first extensive hiking tourism route in Mexico, is set to take place from November 7th to 9th. This exciting annual event was recently unveiled at the Committee of Tourism and Conventions in Tijuana.

Gilberto Gamiño, the treasurer at the tourism committee, emphasized the significance of promoting this event, highlighting its potential to further elevate the region’s status in the ecotourism sector and attract both national and international hiking enthusiasts.

“We are thrilled to announce this event as it reinforces Baja California as a premier destination for outdoor adventures, offering diverse landscapes that feature both desert and coastal environments, ensuring an unforgettable experience,” said Gamiño.

Event coordinator Karla Castillo explained the Travesía Baja 100 is a unique expedition that spans the Baja California Peninsula from coast to coast. Beginning at Playa Altamira on the Pacific Ocean and concluding at Bahía de los Ángeles in the Gulf of California, the route aims to promote hiking in the area. The 110-kilometer trek is divided into three stages and brings participants through stunning locations such as the Valle de Los Cirios, Misión San Borja de Adac, and the natural beauty of Bahía de los Ángeles.

“The hike, first conducted in 1987 by the camping group ‘Mi BC,’ is being revived to encourage physical activity, camaraderie, and an appreciation of the region’s rich flora and fauna,” Castillo stated. Participants will have the chance to explore the region’s history and gain personal insights while benefiting from the emotional and health advantages that hiking offers.

Karla Castillo also shared that this year, the event expects to welcome around 200 hikers from across Mexico and the United States, with the participant base being 35% local, 40% national, and 25% international.

Registration includes a range of benefits like route signage, an event t-shirt, portable toilets, meals at the finish line, and a certificate and medal for participants. An extended package also covers round-trip transportation from Tijuana, camping gear, group cooking equipment, and rest stops with refreshments. To participate, individuals must be over 18, secure their spot, complete a participation form, demonstrate an intermediate hiking level, and ensure full payment by the designated date. The cost is 9,890 pesos.

Since its inception, the Baja 100 events have grown in scope and popularity, transforming the region into a significant ecotourism hub. Over the years, the Baja California Peninsula has hosted a variety of outdoor activities, drawing adventurers from around the world. The Baja 1000, a major off-road race, laid the groundwork for promoting the rugged allure of the landscape. In contrast, the Travesía Baja 100 focuses on hiking, offering an immersive experience that highlights the raw beauty and cultural heritage of the area.

The increasing interest in outdoor sports in Baja California can be attributed to its diverse ecosystems, ranging from arid deserts to rich marine environments. These activities not only promote healthy lifestyles but also boost the local economy by attracting visitors who spend on accommodation, food, and other services.

As Baja California continues to develop as a destination for eco-friendly tourism, events like the Travesía Baja 100 play a crucial role in fostering environmental awareness and sustainable practices. Participants are encouraged to engage with nature responsibly, ensuring that these natural landscapes are preserved for future generations to explore and enjoy.
