**Tijuana Waste Collection Workers Protest Against New City Administration**

Sanitation workers from Tijuana’s Municipal Public Services have taken to the streets, blocking Paseo Centenario near the City Hall. This protest is directed at the newly sworn-in administration, led by Ismael BurgueƱo Ruiz, with workers alleging they are being prevented from performing their duties.

Antonio Ortega, a waste collector, expressed frustration, stating, “We’ve worked alongside previous administrations for a long time without issues, but this new government is sidelining us, blocking our access to essential resources like landfill permits. Some of my colleagues haven’t been able to work for a week, leaving neighborhoods overwhelmed with trash. It’s been this way since the new administration came in.”

The protest involves around 70 trucks and 140 waste collectors. They claim an inability to dispose of waste due to the city’s failure to issue exemption permits for landfill access, significantly impacting the services in multiple neighborhoods. As a result, their income has suffered, as tips are a vital part of their earnings.

The city has communicated that the delay in issuing permits is due to a comprehensive review of documents conducted by the new administration. Despite assurances of a resolution within a week, the promised permits have not been distributed, prompting the workers’ demonstration.

In a bid to resolve the situation, the Tijuana city government disclosed that 10 landfill permits have been allocated for each truck to enable waste services to resume. Additionally, discussions between workers and public services director JosuĆ© GutiĆ©rrez resulted in an agreement to hold further meetings aimed at building a better relationship, benefiting all parties involved and the cityā€™s residents.
