Tijuana Heatwave Sparks Blackouts

**Tijuana Grapples with High Temperatures, Blackouts** Tijuana faces power outages as soaring temperatures reach 39°C, affecting various neighborhoods. Residents urge caution amid ongoing issues.

# High Temperatures Cause Blackouts in Several Tijuana Neighborhoods

Over the weekend, Tijuana experienced soaring temperatures reaching up to 39 degrees Celsius in certain parts of the city. This heatwave has caused several power outages across various neighborhoods, confirmed by Miguel Ángel Ceballos Ramírez, head of the Municipal Civil Protection Directorate.

According to Ceballos Ramírez, the excessive heat intensified the strain on electrical transformers, leading to system failures in some areas for several hours. “People resort to using fans and air conditioning, which overloads the system,” he said.

By Monday, the high temperatures persisted, recording up to 34 degrees Celsius in some zones, along with continued power supply issues. The outages affected neighborhoods including Otay, Playas de Tijuana, and the Madero district, also known as “Cacho.” Other areas like Natura, Jardines de Agua Caliente, Sánchez Taboada, Buenavista, 20 de Noviembre, Cachanillas, El Dorado, El Florido, and Lomas Verdes reported similar problems.

Residents took to social media to voice their complaints and noted that traffic lights on Federico Benítez and Gustavo Díaz Ordaz boulevards were out of service, causing traffic congestion. Individuals who called the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) for assistance reported no estimated resolution time due to the high volume of complaints.

Some educational institutions, including private schools and the Federal High School Lázaro Cárdenas, suspended in-person classes on Monday, opting for online sessions to avoid exposing students to the extreme heat. “Many students rely on public transportation, and the excessive energy consumption at schools also contributed to the decision,” Ceballos Ramírez explained.

The Civil Protection Directorate expects temperatures to drop by Wednesday, possibly reaching between 24 and 25 degrees Celsius. In the meantime, Ceballos Ramírez urged residents not to leave people or pets in vehicles without ventilation, to keep home windows open for air circulation, and to stay hydrated.

He also warned that the high temperatures could increase the risk of fires, advising the population to equip their homes with smoke detectors and fire extinguishers to manage potential flames.
