**Explosion in Storm Drain Injures One in Marrón Neighborhood**
A man sustained first and second-degree burns following an explosion in a storm drain while work was being carried out in the vicinity of the Marrón neighborhood in Tijuana on the morning of December 20, 2024.
According to the Tijuana Fire Department, the emergency call was received at around 9:25 a.m., reporting an explosion in the drainage system near 11th Street, Plutarco Elias Calles, in front of the El Valle Auto Parts store. Upon the arrival of the first response unit, it was confirmed that a person suffered burns to the face and arms.
The incident originated from a newly installed gas registry from a company contracted by the Tijuana State Commission on Public Services. Workers were performing operations in the area. It was stated that monitoring the locality was necessary due to the frequent presence of flammable gases.
Moreover, two additional registers showed 100% probability of explosivity, prompting the arrival of the Hazardous Materials Division to assess the area and determine necessary measures. Despite this, immediate risk was not posed as certain conditions are required for imminent danger. Environmental lab monitoring indicated LP gas presence, and the gas company has previously conducted repairs and maintenance.
Currently, three sectors in the city, including the Marrón neighborhood, are identified as having a high risk of gas-related explosions. Firefighters, the Red Cross, Municipal Civil Protection, the Municipal Police, and the gas company are collaborating on-site to manage the situation.
