**Six States Account for 50% of Homicides; Baja California Ranks Fourth with 99 Murders in March**
As of March 25, 2025, six Mexican states have been identified as accounting for 50% of the country’s homicides, with Baja California ranking fourth on the list. This report comes from Marcela Figueroa Franco, head of the National Executive Secretariat of Public Security, during a recent presidential morning press conference.
President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s government reportedly achieved a 22.4% decrease in homicides, with the average daily count of victims dropping from 86.9 in September 2024 to 67.4 in March 2025. Comparing the annual averages between 2018 and 2025, there was a significant 27% reduction in daily homicides, from 100.5 to 67.4.
Figueroa Franco detailed that the nation saw an annual daily average of 73.4 homicide victims (totaling 797 cases), nearly half of the previously recorded 1,552. Guanajuato recorded the highest figures, with 277 homicide victims in March 2025 alone, representing 17% of the national total. It was followed by the State of Mexico with 126 victims, making up 7.8% of the national total. Baja California recorded 99 victims, ranking fourth.
Omar Hamid GarcÃa Harfuch of the Public Safety and Protection Secretariat highlighted the actions taken in the current administration, noting the arrest of 15,887 individuals linked to high-impact crimes and the seizure of 8,000 firearms, 1,347 kilos, and two million fentanyl pills.
Additionally, a border operation initiated on February 5, 2025, resulted in 1,748 arrests and the confiscation of 1,562 firearms, 7,884 magazines, 129 kilos of fentanyl, and almost one million pills of the synthetic opioid.
