**Developing Mexico’s Military Sector Could Attract Investment: Deitac**
**By Ana Karen Ortiz, August 31, 2024**
Carlos Higuera, Treasurer of Deitac, emphasized the need for developing the military sector in Mexico to attract more international investments. Despite passive involvement, the sector, which includes equipment, weapons, and satellites, holds significant profit margins globally and for the United States.
“We should consider further developing the military sector domestically. While we’ve been indirectly involved, it’s crucial on a global scale, particularly for the U.S., yielding substantial profits,” Higuera highlighted.
However, entering this sector isn’t straightforward. Higuera pointed out that government-issued permits and certified conditions are necessary to venture into this field successfully.
“This sector offers potential opportunities, but we need the right conditions, such as specific government permits and quality certification standards to fully engage,” he explained. Higuera also cited industrial secrecy and a knowledge gap as additional barriers.
Among the requirements for Mexican industries to compete in military armament production is the IATA certification, which allows companies to deliver such goods to governments and industries. Regarding security, certifications like S9100 or ISO, which ensure employee welfare, are deemed essential.
Other sectors necessitating development include the aerospace sector, focusing on satellites, aircraft, and rockets; the technology sector, requiring further promotion despite attracting attention; and the medical devices sector, with Mexico on the radar for countries like New Zealand, known for promoting medical artifacts and having research centers in the U.S. and manufacturing in Mexico.

In addition to developing the military sector, Mexico could benefit significantly from enhancing its aerospace industry. This sector, which encompasses satellite, aircraft, and rocket manufacturing, holds substantial opportunities for economic growth and technological advancement.
Global demand for aerospace technology continues to rise, with innovations in communication satellites and commercial space travel driving the market. By focusing on aerospace development, Mexico can position itself as a critical player in the international arena.
Investments in this industry also promise job creation and skill development, promoting higher education and specialized training in engineering and technology fields. Establishing partnerships with leading aerospace companies could bring about beneficial technology transfers and collaborations.
Furthermore, Mexico’s geographical location positions it advantageously for aerospace logistics and manufacturing, providing easier access to North American markets and beyond. To capitalize on these opportunities, fostering a supportive regulatory environment and investing in infrastructure and research become essential.
