**Major Annual Investment in Medication Procurement Announced**
President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has unveiled an ambitious plan to invest 130 billion pesos annually in the procurement of medications. This strategy aims to enhance transparency and eliminate corruption, ensuring the participation of all relevant health institutions. During a press conference held on October 31, 2024, Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of this initiative for improving healthcare access across Mexico.
Under this new framework for consolidated medication purchasing, the government expects to achieve better prices than those in previous years. “This is how we ensure transparency, inviting all involved in health care supply to participate,” the president stated. The initiative encompasses 4,454 medication keys with a projected procurement of 4.9 billion units, with 26 national institutions such as the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) and the Institute of Social Security and Services for State Workers (ISSSTE) participating.
Eduardo Clark GarcĂa Dobarganes, head of the Undersecretary of Integration and Development of the Federal Ministry of Health, highlighted that digital systems will be integral to this process. This modernization effort seeks to guarantee maximum transparency and international participation, facilitating competitive conditions for acquiring drugs at the best price and quality.
The public tender process will begin at the end of the year, with contracts expected to be awarded by March 1, 2025. The Secretariat of the Public Function will oversee the entire process to ensure accountability and transparency, while the Federal Ministry of Health will focus on effective cost management to sustain the healthcare system.
