Mara Maciel Appointed as Coordinator of Tijuana’s Casa de la Cultura

Mara Maciel has been designated as the new Coordinator of Tijuana’s Casa de la Cultura, located in the Altamira neighborhood. This cultural institution operates under the Municipal Institute of Art and Culture (IMAC), which is led by Illya Haro, an agency of the city’s 25th municipal government. Maciel will hold this position throughout the municipal term from 2024 to 2027.

Maciel’s academic background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Hispanic Language and Literature from the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC) in Tijuana, which she completed between 1995 and 1998. She has also engaged in specialized training, having taken part in a Gender Perspective in Government Actions seminar in Baja California, as well as a course on Public Policies with a Gender Perspective. Furthermore, her training extends to the arts; she participated in the Professional Training Program at Ballet Creole in Toronto, Canada, focusing on dance and theater. For over 25 years, she has been a member of the dance company Mujeres en Ritual, under the leadership of Dora Arreola.

Beyond her artistic pursuits, Maciel has amassed extensive experience in the public sector. Previously she served as the Director of Cultural Dissemination and Artistic Promotion at the Baja California Ministry of Culture from 2019 to 2021. Her career path has also seen her in roles such as the Deputy Director of Cultural Promotion at the Tijuana Cultural Center (2014-2019), Literary Manager at CECUT (2010-2014), and various consultancy roles focusing on the integration of gender perspective into policies at INMUJER BC.

In addition to her public service roles, Maciel is a partner at Abarrotera Cultural, a business promoting regional products and folk art, a role she has held since 2022. Her varied career also includes experience in cultural event coordination, sales in educational projects, and research assistance at El Colegio de la Frontera Norte.
