Macroplaza Bridge Delay Update

Pedestrian bridge delay frustrates Tijuana residents as completion pushed to next administration. Unfinished urban projects plague the city, along with concerns over missing worker, air quality, police health, and neonatal care.

### Pedestrian Bridge to Macroplaza Delays Completion

The pedestrian bridge connecting to Macroplaza in Tijuana will not be completed by the end of September as initially projected. The XXIV Tijuana City Councilor, Gina Arana Cruz, expressed her disappointment over the delay, which was supposed to meet the deadline set by Enrique Bautista, the head of the Urban and Environmental Territorial Development Secretariat (SDTUA).

Arana Cruz mentioned that the responsibility of completing the bridge will fall to the next administration. “It will be up to the following administration to finalize the bridge, ensuring it receives proper follow-up as it was a requested project made by myself, neighborhood residents, and parents with children in the area,” she stated.

She further explained that a recent request for an update on the project revealed delays caused by unremoved high-voltage cables belonging to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE). These cables must be relocated to allow continued construction.

“We anticipated the project would be completed by the end of September, but currently, only 30% of the work is finished, mainly due to the delay caused by these high-voltage cables,” Arana Cruz added.

In discussions with the president-elect, Ismael Burgueño, opposition councilors raised other pending issues such as upgrading roads, updating signage, traffic light synchronization, and regular street maintenance.

Arana Cruz hopes to continue her role in the Commission of Roads and Urban Mobility in the next administration, emphasizing her passion for the project.

### Tijuana Struggling with Unfinished Urban Projects

Tijuana faces challenges with unfinished urban works, leaving 30 projects incomplete according to SDTUA. These include the pedestrian bridge at Macroplaza and other critical infrastructure developments.

Local residents have voiced concerns over the lack of road signage and poorly synchronized traffic lights, which exacerbate mobility issues within the city. Proposed solutions, such as the elimination of medians to improve traffic flow on major thoroughfares, are being considered.

In another urban concern, relatives of missing worker Servando Salazar have protested at Prime Wheel, demanding answers. The Baja California State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) has initiated searches, including inspecting the foundry’s furnaces.

Tijuana also faces environmental challenges with air quality. On September 6 and 8, authorities issued and lifted air pollution alerts for PM2.5 in the city within the same day due to pyrotechnics used in four municipalities. Local authorities are considering penalties for these municipalities.

On public safety, the nature of work shifts for municipal police officers has led to concerns about their health, particularly regarding obesity. Juan Sánchez González noted that irregular work hours disrupt metabolic cycles, contributing to weight gain among officers.

Finally, neonatology services at Tijuana General Hospital (HGT) are in urgent need of attention. Premature infants requiring intensive care face severe complications without adequate parenteral nutrition support, as highlighted by Mónica González.

Tijuana’s administration must address these multifaceted issues promptly to enhance the city’s livability and public welfare.
