### Landslide in Jilotzingo, State of Mexico, Leaves One Infant Dead and Nine Trapped

A tragic landslide occurred in the community of San Luis Ayucan, in the municipality of Jilotzingo, State of Mexico, on Friday night. The disaster resulted in the destruction of at least eight homes, causing severe damage and trapping multiple residents.

By Saturday morning, rescue efforts had successfully liberated three individuals from the debris after an arduous 11-hour operation involving local and state authorities. Despite these efforts, the collapse claimed the life of a three-month-old infant, with nine people still reported missing under the rubble.

“Eight houses were swept away by the landslide, trapping 12 individuals and tragically resulting in the death of a three-month-old child,” confirmed the State of Mexico’s Civil Protection agency.

The coordination among the Mexican Navy, Army, National Guard, Red Cross, municipal police, state authorities, canine units, and State Civil Protection allowed for the timely rescue of the three individuals, who were promptly transported to Lomas Verdes Hospital.

Rescue operations remain ongoing, with all levels of government collaborating intensively. Updates will continue to be provided as the situation evolves.

Earlier, Jilotzingo’s Mayor Ana Teresa Casas González had confirmed the initial rescues via social media. She indicated that the landslide was triggered by the overflow of a nearby river due to heavy rains: “After more than 11 hours of continuous efforts, we can confirm the rescue of three individuals from the landslide in Las Palmas, San Luis Ayucan.”

The local government detailed: “Following 11 hours of intense efforts, a family was rescued from the debris. Thanks to the tireless work of rescue teams, composed of various government levels and specialized personnel, they were successfully freed.” The rescued family was immediately taken to a hospital for medical evaluation.

Additionally, the municipal authorities reported that the Naucalpan-Ixtlahuaca highway remains affected, ongoing efforts are in place to clear alternative routes, and the only operational road is the Blvr. Espíritu Santo-Chiluca.

State Governor Delfina Gómez has directed that the State’s Civil Protection and Risk Management Coordination stay vigilant to assist local authorities in addressing the impacts of the ongoing rains. “Please report any related issues to 911,” she urged on social media.

The State’s Civil Protection clarified: “Immediate assistance was provided by local authorities, Civil Protection, Risk Management, and emergency services. Updates will be continuously shared.”

Mayor Casas González called for support for the affected residents: “Please bring supplies like bottled water, rice, beans, and cooking oil to the command center at the San Luis delegation. Many people will not be able to return to their homes today,” she requested.

An emergency command center has been set up in San Luis Ayucan. The mayor has urged everyone to refrain from visiting the area due to ongoing evaluations and safety risks. “We understand the willingness to help, but it’s crucial to follow protocols and the advice of trained personnel. We will continue working diligently,” she concluded.
