On November 21, 2024, the esteemed athlete Jackie Nava will be recognized with the prestigious Forjador del Año 2024 award by the Grupo Madrugadores of Tijuana. María Eugenia Díazgonzález Basurto, a coordinator with the group known for its analysis and opinion endeavors, praised Nava for breaking barriers for women in sports. “She changed everything. Jackie exemplifies dedication, discipline, and a career unmarred by controversy. She has shown us that with determination, any dream is achievable,” Díazgonzález Basurto shared.
This award marks the 42nd installment given by the group, which prides itself on being apolitical and civil society-focused. They strive to honor various community contributors, including athletes, religious figures, business leaders, and politicians.
Jackie Nava, born in Tijuana, Baja California on April 11, 1980, began her professional career at 16, ascending to prominence with several accolades. Not only did she pursue boxing, but she also attained a degree in Architecture from the Instituto Tecnológico de Tijuana, achieving the highest GPA in her class. In 2004, she secured the National Super Bantamweight Title and in 2005, she triumphed over Leticia Arévalo to win the World Bantamweight Title, making her the first Tijuana woman to claim these titles. That year, Nava earned the title of the World Super Bantamweight Champion under the World Boxing Council.
Apart from her athletic achievements, Nava was also elected as a Federal Deputy in 2015 with the National Action Party (PAN), contributing as Secretary to the Sports Commission and participating in committees concerning children’s rights, youth, and tourism. She has an impressive fight record of 40 wins (16 by knockout), 4 losses, and 4 draws. Moreover, she runs the Jackie Nava Gym in Tijuana, encouraging children and youth with good grades to engage in boxing.
