**Chilpancingo Official and Former Morena Councilman Murdered in Guerrero**
In a tragic series of events, Francisco Gonzalo Tapia Gutiérrez, the General Secretary of the Chilpancingo Municipality in Guerrero, Mexico, was gunned down just minutes before 6 PM on October 3, 2024. This incident occurred a mere two days after he assumed his new role. The attack took place on Teófilo Olea Leyva Street, situated adjacent to the municipal government headquarters in Chilpancingo. Tapia Gutiérrez, whose political career was recently poised under the administration of Mayor Alejandro Arcos Catalán, had previously served as a commissioner for the Transparency, Information Access, and Personal Data Protection Institute of Guerrero from 2021 to 2023.
Tapia Gutiérrez’s lifeless body was found on a sidewalk, dressed in grey dress pants, brown shoes, and a green shirt. An accomplished law graduate from the Autonomous University of Guerrero, he leaves behind a legacy of public service.
This appalling attack closely follows the assassination of Ulises Hernández Martínez, former director of the State Police’s Special Forces Unit. Hernández, who was a candidate for the municipal Secretary of Public Security under the same administration, was shot while driving on Insurgentes Avenue in Chilpancingo. An assistant accompanying him also lost their life in the ambush.
Adding to the turmoil, on October 2, 2024, Carlos Téllez Reyes, a former councilman for the Morena party in Atoyac de Álvarez, was killed alongside a companion, Vladimir “N”, who was also a former municipal worker. This attack in the municipal cemetery marks the most recent attempt on Téllez Reyes’s life, who previously survived an attack in 2018 and another attempt in June 2024, where he sustained injuries.
