**Suspect in Gabriela Fregoso’s Case Apprehended After Years on the Run**

After remaining at large for over three years, Edgar Ismael Rodríguez Montaño, 32, was finally captured. He is a suspect in the attempted murder charges linked to the tragic death of his partner, Gabriela Fregoso Murillo. Gabriela, aged 26, passed away in Ciudad Constitución’s General Hospital, located in the Comondú municipality, on December 31, 2021.

Family members of Gabriela have long asserted that her demise was the result of continuous violent assaults inflicted by Rodríguez Montaño. Despite these claims, initial investigations by the State Attorney General’s Office (PGJE) concluded that she had died of natural causes due to severe urinary tract infections and subsequent organ failures. This decision has fueled a heated debate and demands for justice from various feminist groups and the victim’s family.

Rodríguez Montaño was apprehended on March 11, 2025, by Mexico’s Criminal Investigation Agents, with support from the Mexicali Apprehension Group, as he returned from the U.S. The arrest order, based on a 2021 charge of attempted femicide, alleges that he inflicted severe violence on Gabriela in their reported home in Bahía Asunción.

According to close contacts, Gabriela’s last days were marked by significant suffering following a brutal beating that left her bed-ridden and in deteriorating health, with forensics detailing several grave injuries. Despite all these, the authorities had previously categorized her injuries as non-life-threatening.

Regrettably, although the attack was well-documented and a warrant was issued for Rodríguez Montaño on April 30, 2021, he managed to evade the authorities until his recent capture. Feminist groups have lamented the handling of Gabriela’s case, criticizing the initial labeling of her death as natural and the perceived failure in addressing domestic violence seriously.

**Widespread Fear and Continued Violence in La Paz**

Residents in the Márquez de León neighborhood in La Paz shared their fears, alleging constant abuse at the hands of a neighbor, Gilberto Horacio Burgoin Ortega. According to reports, the resident has been involved in physical and verbal harassment, not only of his neighbors but also allegedly towards his own family. Despite numerous police calls and legal complaints, the intervention has been insufficient, suggesting potential connections Burgoin might have within the local law enforcement.

The neighborhood remains on edge with women like Cecilia Castro Martínez expressing concern about the ongoing risks they, along with their families, are facing. Past incidents have been marked by threats involving weapons, prompting the women to demand urgent action from authorities to prevent further escalation to potential femicide scenarios.

**Increased Allegations Against Law Enforcement**

In a related note, an individual named Gilberto Valdez Martínez has voiced accusations against state police, claiming they attempted to harm him following a personal vendetta initiated by his ex-mother-in-law. With claims of police brutality, Valdez Martínez’s case highlights possible misuse of power within law enforcement circles and the urgent need for safeguarding measures.

Overall, both cases underscore systemic issues of violence against women and the critical need for authorities to extend more effective protections. As these matters unfold, there remains a resounding call for justice and reforms within the justice system to adequately address and prevent domestic violence and femicide in Mexico.
