Rosarito’s famous “Playa El Bebé” is set to host the inaugural round of Baja California’s state fishing competition on Sunday, March 30th. The event boasts a wide appeal, drawing in nearly 150 anglers last year from within the state and neighboring Southern California.

This tournament is a key part of the official schedule by SEPESCA BC, backed by Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda’s administration, and organized by the Baja California Fishing Clubs Association. The local TJ Fishing Club, spearheaded by Nemesio Salazar Vázquez and Omar Reyes Moreno, will serve as the event’s hosts.

The “El Bebé” Tournament is the first of three selective beach fishing tournaments that determine eligibility for the State Championship. Activities will commence at 5:00 AM with angler registration, followed by the official fishing start at 7:00 AM. Weigh-in will conclude at 1:00 PM, allowing those already in line by the cutoff to remain in the running.

Participants will compete for various prizes in categories like children’s, women’s, mojarra, and other species. Additionally, there will be raffles and local fish delicacies on offer. Interested parties can gather more information on registration, rules, costs, and prizes by contacting 664 493 6014 or 664 339 9173, or by emailing tjfishingclub@gmail.com. Further details are also available on the club’s website.

To support the event, Victor Hugo Méndez, head of Sport Fishing at SEPESCA BC, has provided financial assistance to the organizers to aid with event expenses.

Participants can register on the event day or pre-register at Pesca del Mar Outdoors in Ensenada or the Fishing Crew Store in La Gloria. Following this event, the subsequent rounds of the state competition are scheduled for April 27th at Sunset Beach in Ensenada, hosted by Club Pura Vida, and on July 20th at Playa El Pabellón in San Quintín, organized by Pioleros del Valle de San Quintín. The top anglers from these competitions will earn the opportunity to represent Baja California at the VI National Beach Sport Fishing Championship, taking place from September 19-20 at Playa Manzanilla, Jalisco.
