### Claudia Sheinbaum Assumes Presidency of Mexico; Cadet Places Presidential Sash

Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo officially assumed the role of President of Mexico at 11:30 AM on October 1, 2024, during a ceremony held in the Session Hall of the Legislative Palace of San Lázaro in the Venustiano Carranza borough of Mexico City.

Ifigenia Martha Martínez y Hernández, a prominent member of Morena and the President of the Mesa Directiva of San Lázaro, delivered a brief address in the presence of Sheinbaum and outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Sheinbaum took the oath of office, promising, “I pledge to uphold and ensure the observance of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States and the laws derived therefrom, and to loyally and patriotically perform the duties of President of the Republic which the people have entrusted to me, always seeking the well-being and prosperity of the Union; and if I fail to do so, may the nation hold me accountable.”

Federal legislators present at the ceremony chanted “¡Es un honor estar con Claudia hoy!” and “¡Viva México!”. Martínez y Hernández faced difficulty in placing the Presidential Sash on Sheinbaum, leading to a cadet from the National Defense Ministry (SEDENA) accomplishing the task. Subsequently, Sheinbaum, the first female president in Mexico’s 214-year history of independence, delivered a speech. The event concluded with the singing of the national anthem.

Following the ceremony, Sheinbaum is expected to lead a rally at the Plaza de la Constitución or Zócalo at around 4:00 PM on October 1, 2024, a day declared a public holiday by the Congress of the Union. During this rally, she will also receive a traditional staff of command from 71 indigenous communities.

U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas and National Security Advisor Liz Sherwood-Randall attended the inauguration alongside First Lady Jill Biden. Additionally, Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, representing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, was present.
