### New Recreational and Sports Facility: Cerro de las Abejas Opens in Tijuana

The Cerro de las Abejas recreational and sports park has officially opened in Tijuana, offering the local community a wide range of facilities for various sports. The park, managed by the Municipal Institute of Sports (IMDET), includes spaces for soccer, fast soccer, soccer 7, baseball, and multi-use courts for basketball and volleyball. Additionally, it features a hiking route, a children’s play area, a lookout, and an amphitheater for events.

This major project, supported jointly by private initiatives and the Tijuana City Council, saw an investment totaling approximately 193 million pesos. Out of this, 171.3 million were provided by the municipal authorities and 21.4 million by private entities, aiming to benefit the families in the area who previously lacked adequate facilities for physical activities.

Spanning an extensive 7.6 hectares, the park also includes 40 hectares dedicated to hiking activities. This new facility is expected to directly benefit over 220,000 residents—70% of whom are young people—and attract between 20,000 to 25,000 users each week.

“We are very happy with this project, which will benefit more than 20,000 people per week. It is the largest park in the Eastern zone. The public can now enjoy multiple sports facilities including those for soccer, baseball, volleyball, basketball, and more,” stated Iván Fierro, head of IMDET.

Although 90% complete, the park still has pending components, such as a second baseball field and a jogging track around the entire sports unit.

David Sinohui, a seasoned baseball player with experience in both the Mexican League and the Pacific League, expressed that the new facilities will be particularly beneficial for the development of local youth. “This project is a blessing for kids on the Eastern side of the city. It’s essential to have facilities like this to foster sports and keep children off the streets. Back in my day, we played in dirt fields due to a lack of proper facilities, but now the youth will have no excuses,” he said.

The Cerro de las Abejas park is now open to the community from Monday to Friday, from 6 AM to 10 PM.

### Secondary Article: Completion of the Delegational Athletic Series in Tijuana

On Saturday, September 21, IMDET hosted the seventh and final stage of the Delegational Athletic Series, drawing 5,500 runners to the Centro region. The event kicked off from the Municipal Palace with a relatively flat 5-kilometer route that covered various streets in the Rio area.

Mario “Jumi” Martínez was the first to cross the finish line, clocking in at 15 minutes and 41 seconds, making him the fastest runner in five out of seven stages for the year. Keysi Ibarra led the women’s category with a finish time of 18 minutes and 21 seconds, securing her position as the best female runner by winning three out of seven stages.

The first 2,000 participants to finish and hand in their numbered bibs received a collectible medal that fits with the medals from the other stages of the 2024 series.

“The entire IMDET team is thrilled with the results, reflecting our hard work. The running community responded positively, with up to 6,000 participants per stage, breaking records. We hope that the upcoming administration will continue this program which has become a tradition in the Tijuana running community,” concluded Iván Fierro, head of IMDET.
