In a significant development for the legal framework of Mexico City, Bertha María Alcalde Luján has been selected as the sole candidate to head the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office (FGJ-CDMX). This decision was ratified on December 21, 2024, by the Committee on Justice Administration and Prosecution during a special session.

Alcalde Luján, previously the General Director of the Institute of Security and Social Services for State Workers (ISSSTE) under President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s administration, is set to succeed Ulises Lara López, who has been serving as the interim head of the institution.

The committee session concluded with a vote of nine in favor and three against in support of Alcalde Luján’s candidacy, thereby advancing her nomination to be considered by the full legislative assembly of Mexico City.

Alberto Martínez Urincho, the committee’s president, emphasized the importance of selecting a candidate with the appropriate profile to spearhead justice administration. “Each member of the committee has evaluated the candidates, and Bertha Alcalde emerged as the most fitting for the role,” he stated.

The proposition will now proceed to the city’s Congress, needing a two-thirds majority approval on December 23, 2024. If not approved, a new shortlist will be produced by the Citizen Judicial Council.

Alcalde Luján’s vast experience includes her roles as a legal expert and advisor in security and justice reform, and as the director at various governmental institutions. She holds a law degree from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and a master’s degree from New York University.
