## Amnesty International Urges Senate to Reject Incorporation of National Guard into SEDENA

Amnesty International (AI), a global non-governmental organization, has called on the Mexican Senate to reject a proposal that would integrate the National Guard (GN) into the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA). This appeal was made public on the 18th of September, 2024.

“The proposal to incorporate the National Guard into SEDENA is currently under consideration. We urge the Mexican Senate not to approve this initiative and to abandon the militarized approach to public security in Mexico,” stated AI from its headquarters in London.

Created in 2019, the National Guard has mostly consisted of military and naval personnel. A reform in 2023 extended the use of armed forces in security roles until 2028. AI reiterated these points via their social media account on X (formerly known as Twitter).

“The Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation previously ruled that the transfer of control of the National Guard to SEDENA is unconstitutional. Nevertheless, a new initiative aims to cement this militarization. Its approval would be a setback for civil security and rights protection,” Amnesty International explained.

“Security should be managed by civilian institutions, not military ones. The responsibility lies with the Mexican Senate to protect its citizens. Voting in favor of this initiative would disregard concerns about human rights and public safety. The people are watching. #MilitarizationIsNotTheSolution,” concluded Amnesty International.
