The authorities in Zapopan, Jalisco have arrested Armando Gómez Núñez, known as “Delta 1” or ‘Máximo’. He is alleged to be the chief hitman of Los Deltas, an elite group working under the notorious Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), led by Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, or “El Mencho”. The arrest took place at approximately 5:03 PM on October 28, 2024, at the junction of Patria Avenue and Lago Superior Street in the Lagos del Country neighborhood.

According to the National Detention Registry, Gómez Núñez, the suspected operational head of the CJNG in Guadalajara, was apprehended alongside a woman believed to be his partner. At the time of his arrest, “Delta 1” was wearing blue jeans, white sneakers, and a black short-sleeved shirt. Following his capture, he was handed over to the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Crimes against Health from the Attorney General’s Office.

Previously, on June 21, 2020, Gómez Núñez had been detained near his most recent arrest site, in the Jardines del Country area of Zapopan. At that time, authorities seized two rifles, a handgun, ammunition, cell phones, and over 500 grams of cocaine, amongst other items. However, despite facing charges, “Delta 1” was released under unspecified circumstances and dates, despite being linked to several high-profile crimes, including an attack on a state official in May 2018.

In the backdrop of “Delta 1’s” arrest, Jalisco continues to face rising violence attributed to power struggles within the CJNG. This cartel, known for its violent tactics and territorial battles against rival groups, dominates the drug trafficking routes in the region. Security experts suggest that the capture of key figures like Gómez Núñez might temporarily disrupt cartel operations but often leads to further violence as rival factions vie for control.

This year has seen several clashes between security forces and cartel members, resulting in heightened anxiety among local communities. Government efforts focussing on dismantling cartel leadership structures have had mixed outcomes, as new leaders emerge and factions within the CJNG fight to consolidate power.

Analysts emphasize the importance of comprehensive strategies involving socio-economic reforms and community engagement to counteract the cartel’s influence and provide alternatives to those susceptible to joining criminal operations.
