Winter Care for Kids and Seniors

“Protect children under 5 and seniors this winter. Monitor for respiratory symptoms. Get flu vaccinations early for optimal protection. Stay vigilant, avoid self-medication, and seek medical advice promptly.”

### Precautions Urged for Children Under 5 and Seniors During Winter

As the winter season approaches, health authorities are advising extra caution for two particularly vulnerable groups: children under the age of five and adults over 60. According to Enrique Campos Gutiérrez, the deputy head of the Health Jurisdiction Number 2, covering Tijuana, Tecate, and Playas de Rosarito, these population segments require enhanced protection during this period.

Campos Gutiérrez emphasizes that individuals with respiratory conditions, a history of smoking, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), allergies, or asthma should be especially vigilant. The public is urged to monitor these vulnerable family members for symptoms like headaches, sore throats, coughs, runny or congested noses, difficulty breathing, and fevers.

“Seek medical advice at health centers, but the most important recommendation is to avoid self-medicating,” Campos Gutiérrez advised.

The influenza vaccination campaign began in October, and nearly 50% of the target 23,000 doses had been administered by late November. Vaccination is most effective the earlier it is administered, ideally by December, to ensure the population is well protected.

### Additional Context: Winter Health Precautions

In light of the continuing cold weather, similar advisories have been issued by health departments in other regions, underscoring the importance of flu vaccination and general health vigilance during the winter months. Reports indicate that respiratory illnesses typically surge during this period, making vaccination crucial for both individual health and broader public safety.

Public health officials are also advising on broader winter precautions, including maintaining adequate indoor heating, wearing appropriate clothing, and ensuring proper nutrition to bolster immune systems. Regular check-ins on vulnerable family members and neighbors are encouraged to safeguard their well-being during the colder months.

By taking proactive steps and staying informed about health recommendations, communities can better navigate the challenges posed by the winter season.
