**Ruth Vargas Leyva Honored at UABC International Book Fair 2025**
In a celebration of literary talent and cultural contribution, the University of Baja California (UABC) paid tribute to renowned Tijuana poet Ruth Vargas Leyva as part of the 2025 UABC International Book Fair. The event, held on March 27, marked the opening of the prestigious fair, with Leyva receiving the “Trayectoria FIL UABC 2025” accolade from University President Luis Enrique Palafox Maestre.
The tribute recognized Leyva’s exceptional work in promoting the culture of Baja California through her roles as an educator, researcher, and writer. Her influence in poetry, particularly as a significant female voice in the region, was highly commended. The recognition also highlighted her ongoing contributions to fostering dialogue with new generations of writers and readers.
Continuing the honors, a literary panel discussion featuring poets Antonio León and Víctor Soto Ferrel was held to explore Leyva’s life and work. León recited Leyva’s poem “Mar,” while Ferrel praised her for being a widely recognized and celebrated poet.
A second event honoring Leyva’s contributions is scheduled for April 6 at the Otay Campus Community Center in Tijuana, where fellow poets Mónica Morales, Paty Blake, and Jorge Ortega are set to participate.
During her acceptance speech, Leyva reflected on her literary journey, which began in the Poetry Workshop Voz de Amerindia, and acknowledged the role UABC has played in supporting local literary talent. She emphasized the importance of resisting the centralization of culture and literature, appreciating UABC’s efforts in supporting local authors and literary initiatives.
Born in Culiacán, Sinaloa, and raised in Tijuana from the age of two, Leyva has made significant contributions to the literary world. Her notable works include “Celeste y ocho poemas,” “Poemas del ordenador,” and “Sólo estamos de paso.” Her influence extends beyond her written work, having taught at UABC and contributed to the literary scene for several decades.
