**Negligence Alleged in Tragic Death at Tijuana General Hospital**

*September 17, 2024*

Isaías Copado Ocampo has filed a complaint with the General Prosecutor’s Office of Baja California, alleging medical negligence in the death of his wife, Michelle Montero Zurita, at the General Hospital of Tijuana (HGT). Michelle, a 21-year-old mother, passed away on September 2 after a hematologist’s procedure allegedly perforated her heart and lung during an injection for a medical test.

Isaías shared that Michelle was initially treated at the General Hospital of Tecate, where she was admitted on August 31 due to low platelet and red blood cell counts, necessitating a blood transfusion. She was later transferred in stable condition to HGT for a bone marrow examination to diagnose her condition.

At HGT, complications arose during the procedure on the second floor, resulting in Michelle losing consciousness and the medical team being unable to resuscitate her. Following her death, HGT’s deputy director and social worker claimed her frail health led to the fatal outcome, a notion Isaías disputes.

Isaías also reported that the hospital staff refused to disclose the name of the last specialist who attended to his wife. He criticized the hospital for not notifying him of the risks involved in the bone marrow extraction and for the lack of a necropsy. The family felt pressured to remove Michelle’s body from the hospital, given the limited refrigeration facilities that would delay the process by four to five days. Michelle’s body has since been cremated and buried.

The delegate of the IMSS-Bienestar system in Baja California, Miguel Romero Flores, announced that HGT has been prompted to launch a protocol review to ascertain the responsibility of the attending doctors. The state health authority has also instructed officials to contact Isaías for a meeting. The Baja California State Human Rights Commission (CEDHBC) has commenced an investigation into the case.
