Town Resists Tyranny

Explore the elusive serenity of a quaint town in Jalisco shielding its core values from evil, reminiscent of Félix Varela’s teachings against tyrants camouflaging malevolence with false faith. Meanwhile, in Venezuela, mounting turmoil challenges authoritarian rule.

### An Exemplary Town – By Germán Orozco Mora (August 12, 2024)

A friend once told me about a small town in Jalisco where evil in its many forms finds it nearly impossible to enter. In this unique place, residents seem to have a tradition of filtering anything that could harm the children and core values of the community: the family.

The esteemed Cuban thinker and priest, Félix Varela, faced marginalization by the Spanish Crown and its institutions. During his 30-year exile in the United States, he penned “Letters to Elpidio” primarily to inspire the youth, whom he considered the nation’s strength. His writings reveal the essence of tyranny, despotism, and dictatorship: impiety. This concept goes beyond mere disbelief; it involves pretending to have faith while living a life that starkly contradicts it.

Nicolás Maduro, the notorious despot of Venezuela, embodies this concept perfectly. He calls upon God, Christ, and Bolívar to mask his malevolence, aligning with many historical tyrants who misuse religion to manipulate and dominate their people. They profane the sacred, pretending to share popular sentiments while inflicting suffering and impoverishment upon their societies.

In a world marred by poverty, migration, hunger, unemployment, lack of healthcare, and continuous regional conflicts, such as those in El Salvador, Argentina, China, Iran, Palestine, Syria, and Israel, billions of dollars are spent on military equipment and defense technologies. All the while, the common people are left in misery, without basic necessities.

Impressive still is the saying of the Cuban priest Félix Varela: “In a virtuous town, a tyrant cannot rise.” This virtue is starkly absent in many modern conflicts where supposed religious belief is exploited for personal and political gains.

Felix Varela’s words continue to echo through time, challenging us not just to believe, but to live our beliefs transparently. The power of true religious devotion lies in its ability to curb human passions, providing a bulwark against tyranny. Without it, humanity stands defenseless against those who wield power with impunity.

The situation in Venezuela continues to deteriorate as political instability grinds the nation further into chaos. Nicolás Maduro’s administration faces mounting international and internal pressures. Millions of Venezuelans, disillusioned by economic hardships and authoritarian rule, have chosen alternative leadership, risking their lives to protest a regime that clings to power through violence and intimidation.

Maduro’s recent outbursts, including his call for foreign powers to stay out of Venezuelan affairs, underscore his increasingly precarious position. Observers liken his repressive tactics to those of historically infamous dictators, making him a contemporary symbol of failed governance.

The groundswell of opposition against Maduro’s administration becomes ever more visible, reflecting the universal yearning for governance that prioritizes the welfare of its people over the preservation of autocratic power.
