Invitation to Tijuana Residents for a Security Vigil
Tijuana residents are being called to participate in a “Vigil for Security” this Wednesday, July 17th, starting at 7:30 PM at the Cuauhtémoc roundabout in Zona RÃo. The vigil is in response to recent violent events in Baja California, including the murder of business leader Minerva Pérez Castro in Ensenada and the femicide of Paola Bañuelos in Mexicali.
Last week, two public shootings occurred in Tijuana—one outside the Caliente Stadium after a Liga MX football match and another inside El Vergel pools. Additionally, an armed attack outside the National Guard facilities on Monday injured three people, and another shooting in Zona Centro left four people wounded, including a minor.
Edgardo Flores Campbell, president of the Citizens’ Security Council of Tijuana (CCSP), highlighted the ongoing security crisis, emphasizing the need for solutions. Hilda Salcido, another CCSP member, pointed out the evident lack of coordination and progress among government levels, urging authorities to change their strategies.
Carlos Robles Literas, president of the Avenue Revolución Business Association, noted that the security issues in Tijuana have negatively impacted central area businesses by deterring foreign tourists. MarÃa Eugenia DÃaz González Basurto from Grupo Madrugadores expressed concern over the normalization of insecurity affecting even family activities.
Civic groups, citizen committees, and business sectors are urging residents to join neighborhood committees and engage in public policy actions. José Luis Pérez Canchola, former Human Rights Attorney for the state, stressed that the violence might worsen, supporting the call for security.
The Council Coordinating Business (CCE) representatives announced on Monday, July 15th, that the vigil will take place simultaneously in Tijuana, Mexicali, Ensenada, Tecate, and Playas de Rosarito. Participants are encouraged to wear black clothing or ribbons and bring candles as symbols of solidarity and hope.
Residents are also invited to stay informed and get involved in discussions surrounding local safety measures.
