### Tijuana Hosts Its First Animal Welfare Fair
In an effort to promote the wellbeing of pets and their responsible care, Tijuana held its inaugural Animal Welfare Fair on December 17, bringing much-needed attention and services to countless pets across the city. This event was organized in the third stage of the Tijuana River area and saw the attendance of many pet lovers and public figures alike.
Mayor Ismael BurgueƱo emphasized the importance of the event, stating, āSuch events strengthen us as human beings by allowing us to give the animals the value they deserve since they are with us through thick and thin, providing unconditional love. It’s our duty to care for them.ā He further highlighted a proposed program to establish a Canine Unit within the Municipal Police, aimed at supporting the State’s Attorney General in rescue efforts. āAs a municipality, we have a responsibility to their care and protection. No sentient being should suffer abuse in Tijuana,ā BurgueƱo said.
Additionally, Viridiana Flores Flores, the Municipal Director of Prevention, Control, and Health, noted her alignment with the government’s humane approach, driven by President Ismael BurgueƱo. She acknowledged the efforts of Governor Marina del Pilar Avila Olmeda in developing a refuge in Mexicali and expressed the goal of creating a similar haven in Tijuana.
The Municipal Animal Control department played a significant role, bringing dogs available for adoption, all of which were already vaccinated, dewormed, and sterilized. The fair also offered educational talks on pet nutrition and training, alongside basic services such as vaccinations and workshops aimed at promoting pet care and welfare.
The fair didn’t just focus on direct services. Local organizations and entrepreneurs showcased various pet products, accessories, and food, with different animal protection groups joining to support the cause.
The event also featured tributes to exemplary animals, including Paloma, a dog rescued from abuse, who played an active role in raising awareness about animal cruelty in schools, and K-9 Max, who received recognition for his bravery and dedication in rescuing a child.
The Animal Welfare Fair not only provided vital services but also aimed to cultivate a culture of responsible pet ownership and care among Tijuana residents.
