Residents of Playas de Tijuana Unclear on Elevated Viaduct Completion
As of now, local residents are left in the dark regarding the height at which the elevated viaduct in Playas de Tijuana will conclude, according to Carlos Alberto Melo Macías, president of the Neighborhood Association. Frustration has grown, as there have been meetings with authorities but no clear answers on the project’s completion. “They’ve informed us studies are being conducted and alternatives are being considered, but as the project progresses, we still lack clarity about its end,” stated Melo Macías.
Attempts to gain details from municipal, state, and federal authorities have thus far been unsuccessful. Residents are concerned that the viaduct could increase traffic congestion, especially with vehicles arriving from Tijuana’s airport. The viaduct’s endpoint might push this traffic towards areas like Cañón del Matadero, exacerbating existing issues without fully addressing airport traffic concerns.
These worries stem from past modifications demanded by residents of the La Isla subdivision, which led to changes in access to Playas. The authorities said these local demands aimed to prevent a tunnel from passing beneath their homes, but despite this, the final project outline remains undefined.
In related developments, the Morelos Node is expected to be ready by the end of the year, offering some relief to local traffic issues. However, 2025 is shaping up to be challenging with anticipated federal budget cuts, impacting local infrastructure projects.
