### Four Tijuana Intersections Among the Most Dangerous in the Country
On Thursday, August 15, 2024, it was reported that four intersections in Tijuana have been listed among the top 50 most dangerous in Mexico, according to information presented by the organization Estrategia Misión Cero. The study, which analyzed data from major cities across the country, identified the intersection at Avenida Aldrete and Avenida Miguel Negrete in Zona Centro as the most hazardous. Close behind are the intersections at Avenida Baja California Norte and Av. Paseo del Pedregal.
Another critical intersection is at Blvd. Lázaro Cárdenas with Vía Rápida Oriente and Juan Ojeda. Additionally, the roads with the highest number of accident reports include Blvd. Aguacaliente, Paseo de los Héroes, and Blvd. de Las Américas.
The study also revealed that the number of vehicles on the road has increased by an astonishing 71.27% over the past six years. The national rate of fatalities in road accidents stands at 3.4 per 100,000 inhabitants, while in Baja California, it is significantly higher at 4.3.
Ivonne Hernández, a mobility activist, highlighted in the press conference that these incidents lead to significant financial and legal challenges. “These injuries result in debts and legal processes; we aren’t just talking about fatalities but also other immeasurable consequences,” she stated.
Hernández mentioned that Tijuana, with a population exceeding two million, is severely understaffed with only 80 traffic agents. “The city’s sprawl and ineffective public transportation compel individuals to purchase substandard vehicles,” she added.
In the midst of a mobility crisis in Baja California, with Tijuana being particularly hard-hit, Hernández criticized the State Congress for not aligning the Federal Mobility Law with localized regulations. She emphasized the dangers of high-speed travel, whether by bicycle on sidewalks or vehicles on roads designed to encourage speed, pointing out the pervasive issue of traffic violence.
**Additional Coverage on Road Safety in Tijuana**
Recent reports indicate a concerning trend in road safety within Tijuana. According to a recent assessment by another local authority, the lack of proper infrastructure and insufficient road safety measures contribute significantly to the number of accidents. The city is working to implement more rigorous traffic laws and improve road conditions, aiming to reduce the accident rate and enhance overall safety.
Community leaders and policymakers are advocating for the installation of better traffic signals and pedestrian crossings in key areas. Moreover, public awareness campaigns are being launched to educate drivers and pedestrians about safe road practices.
While these efforts are steps in the right direction, the realization of tangible improvements in road safety will require continued investment and a unified approach from both government authorities and the local community.
