**National Maxi-Basketball Championship Announced for Tijuana**
For the first time, Tijuana will host the National Maxi-Basketball Championship from November 14 to 18, 2024. The event will feature over 200 teams, both male and female, from across the country. This championship also serves as a qualifier for the 2025 World Championship in Ticino, Switzerland.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, September 3 at the Multi-Purpose Gym of Tijuana’s High Performance Center. Supported by the Baja California INDE and authorized by FIMBA, the event aims to offer top-tier facilities across the city for participating teams.
The event’s officiation was led by Laura Marmolejo Toscano, General Director of INDE in Baja California, representing the state’s Governor, Marina del Pilar Ávila. Other notable attendees included Fernando Pérez Serrano, President of the International Maxi-Basketball Federation, Andrea Jáuregui, General Director of the Zonkeys, and Manuel Ernesto Bustamante from Cetys University. Additional honored guests were César Meza Sandoval, President of the Tijuana Hall of Fame, Omar Plascencia from UABC’s Sports Faculty, Omar Bermúdez, an international referee who participated in the Paris 2024 Olympics, and Arturo Chávez Delgadillo, Director of the organizing committee.
Nineteen courts in twelve venues, including CAR de Tijuana, Cetys, UABC, and Auditorio Zonkeys, among others, will be used for the championship. The organizers, experienced in managing similar events, have collaborated with sports authorities and sponsors to prepare for the arrival of over 4,000 people including players and their companions.
Top teams from various states, selected through regional qualifiers, will compete in categories ranging from 30 to 65 years old for men, and 30 to 60 years old for women. This national event is an important qualifier for the 2025 World Championship scheduled from June 27 to July 6 in Ticino, Switzerland.
The deadline to register for the National Maxi-Basketball Championship is October 1. Currently, 34 teams from Baja California have already qualified, and teams from twelve other states have also reserved their spots. A referee clinic is scheduled from September 20 to 22, and the team draw is set for October 25, with the final pre-championship meeting on November 19.
